Essential oil is the concentrated liquid which contains the aromatic compounds that is extracted from plants. There are many ways that essential oil is produced, but the usual methods are distillation, expression or solvent extraction. Essential oil is one of the main components which is used in the making of perfumes, cosmetics and medicine. We tend to think of it in these terms, but not many people realise that essential oil is used in the manufacture of household cleaning products and for food and drink flavorings. Essential oil through the ages was extracted via pressing, and this practice still exists today in such countries as Egypt. This involves pressing the plant material and then burying it in sealed vessels in the desert for months, which drives out the water. The essential oil which was found in Tutankhamen's tomb had retained its scent after being buried and sealed for over 3000 years.
The most common essential oils that most people are familiar with are lavender, peppermint and eucalyptus. These essential oils are usually produced via the distillation process. The essential oil that is extracted from citrus peel is usually expressed via mechanical means, or cold pressed. This is a much cheaper process of extracting the essential oil. The essential oils which are used in perfumery are quite often extracted from rose petals and other flowers. It takes many pounds of rose petals to distil just one ounce of pure rose essential oil. The healing effects of essential oils are ascribed to the aromatic compounds from the plant extracts. Many of the essential oils also have medicinal properties and these have been used since antiquity and are still widely used today.
Some essential oils have antiseptic properties, some have an uplifting effect on the mind, and some are naturally calming. All essential oils will have different properties. Essential oils are very potent and used in their pure state can be quite irritating to the skin. Usually the essential oil will be placed in a carrier oil to prevent this. Carrier oils used with essential oils are usually sweet almond oil or hazelnut.
The purest of essential oil is the pharmaceutical grade, and then all the essential oil which is suitable for aromatherapy is termed the therapeutic grade. Concern is now filtering through with the therapeutic essential oil of contamination by pesticides to the original plants, so organic and wild essential oil is now being grown and harvested but it of course will be much more expensive.
